PURDEY
A 16-BORE ROTARY-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 4099,
converted from percussion to pinfire, then to centrefire, 30in. replacement black powder only bold damascus barrels, wide raised rib engraved '2' and signed 'THOMAS SEARLE. GUN MAKER. 23. JERMYN ST. ST. JAMES'S. LONDON. S.W.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl choke, some internal pitting, carved serpentine pinfire fences (breech end of barrels with infilled pinfire apertures and starburst engraved detailing), non-rebounding sidelocks, repair to right hammer, Jones patent rotary underlever over bowed triggerguard, grip-safety, bold acanthus scroll engraving with feathered bordering, 14 1/8in. figured stock (swept at comb), fore-end with crosspin release and central repair, barrels, fore-end wood and iron numbered 8631, weight 6lb. 7oz.
Provenance: Gun no. 4099 is recorded as being a 16-bore percussion shotgun, sold on the 18th July 1846 to a Mr Graham Smith, at a cost of £52 10s
